We all share a fervent passion for shearling boots and other footwear. However, its necessary to keep perspective on the stark reality that many people and needy children don’t even own one pair of decent shoes. This brings to mind the famous quote:
“A pair of shoes can change your life. Just ask Cinderella.”
There’s a profound and unfortunate degree of of truth in that quote for too many impoverished people in third-world nations. A single pair of sandals can literally make the difference between life and death. Here’s the logic behind that harsh truth.
Of all the diseases in these countries, the most prevalent one affecting over one billion people is the Soil-transmitted Helminthes. Many complications including anemia and malnutrition are associated with Helminthes and it quickly spreads in areas that are plagued with inadeaquate sanitation making the soil itself a breeding ground for these truly lethal parasites.
Another unfortunate reality is that at least sixty-percent of those afflicted by this soil-borne parasite are innocent children. They are highly exposed to this parasite since they spend the majority of their bleak days walking barefoot on rubbish dumps to scrummage something to either eat or sell. This doesn’t even get into the secondary problems of risking cuts and infections merely by constantly being barefoot.
Having access to recycled shoes and sandals becomes an additional lifeline for these destitute people when you consider the fact that they allow extremely poor people to go the extra distance required to find water, food, shelter, and/or medical assistance.
