Shearling Boots & Sheepskin Boots | What’s The Difference? December 22, 2009

You might be wondering what the difference is between shearling boots and sheepskin boots.  The answer is: there really isn’t any difference at all between the two.  When you look at the material used to make these boots, shearling is in fact a sheepskin pelt that went through a shearing process so that it could have that uniform look and feel.

Sheepskin boots and shearling boots are both known as Ugg boots, or simply Uggs.  Ugg boots, believed to have originated from either Australia or New Zealand, are popular for giving a good level of warmth, which makes them nice winter boots.  The soft wool fibers of sheepskin and shearling act as a natural insulator.  Because shearling is breathable, it wicks moisture away, keeping your feet dry and at body temperature.  This means that even in cold weather, sheepskin boots and shearling boots can be worn without socks.

There is a wide range of heights for shearling boots and sheepskin boots.  This means, you have a lot of options — from shearling ankle boots to knee high shearling boots to tall shearling boots.  W omen’s winter boots need not be boring as they also come in a variety of colors and styles, from black boots to lace up boots to furry boots.

One example of these boots is the Bearpaw Altai.  When I wear my pair of these winter boots, I feel warm and fuzzy all to way to my toes.  Its sheepskin footbed adds softness for an all-day coziness while its rubber outsole gives me enough traction.  It was versatile enough to run through an airport in, warm enough for -50 degree weather, but not too hot that it makes my feet sweat.  On top of that, it’s really cute.

More features of the Bearpaw Altai include:

Made with genuine suede upper and shearling at the collar and trim, it doesn’t compromise comfort for style.

1″ heel / 10.00″ shaft height / 15.00″ circumference

Another example of these boots is the Ugg Sundance II.  I recently got this and these boots make me feel like I’m walking on a cloud, thanks to the genuine fleece sock liner.  My Sundance II boots are made of rustic sheepskin with beautiful shearling trims.  It has a molded rubber outsole, which is good for slip resistance.  Aside from that, it has toe and heel bumpers made of suede, which is good for abrasion resistance.  People notice my boots all the time and I get tons of compliments.

More features of the Ugg Sundance II:

Made in New Zealand, it has replaceable, removable and washable insole.
1 1/4″ heel / 10.50″ shaft height / 16.00″ circumference

With these two authentic and high-quality shearling and sheepskin boots, I won’t settle for fakes and imperfect synthetic boots that compromise my comfort.
